3rd IPITA/JDRF/HSCI Conference on Stem Cell Derived Beta Cells

SPEAKER HIGHLIGHTS

Matthias Hebrok, Ph.D.

Director, University of California San Francisco Diabetes Center
San Francisco, CA, USA

Matthias Hebrok, PhD, Hurlbut-Johnson Distinguished Chair in Diabetes Research, is Director of the Diabetes Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He earned his PhD in Developmental Biology from the Max-Planck-Institute in Freiburg Germany, then performed his postdoctoral research at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Harvard University. His laboratory has developed novel methods to generate functional, insulin-producing beta-cells from human stem cell populations.

Maike Sander, MD

Director, Pediatric Diabetes Research Center (PDRC)
Professor, University of California San Diego Departments of Pediatrics and Cellular and Molecular Medicine
La Jolla, CA, USA

Maike Sander is Director of the Pediatric Diabetes Research Center and Co-Director of the Center on Diabetes in the Institute of Engineering in Medicine at UC San Diego. Her laboratory employs human pluripotent stem cell-based organoid approaches to uncover mechanisms that control the formation and proper function of pancreatic beta-cells.

Matthias von Herrath, MD

Professor
Division of Developmental Immunology
La Jolla, CA, USA

Dr. Matthias von Herrath is committed to clinical translation of immune-based interventions in autoimmune and metabolic diseases, the latter in particular being an exciting emerging field. His expertise and main strength is working at the interface of experimental research to interpret and refine early phase I/II clinical trials in order to optimize strategies for phase 3 trials and drug approval. This comprises translation from various animal models as well as human organoid models to human interventions, optimization of immunotherapies and their relative ranking, assessment of combination therapies, development of biomarkers as primary or secondary outcomes, induction of antigen specific tolerance in autoimmunity, regulatory cells and clinical T cell assays. Matthias von Herrath is Vice President and Senior Medical officer at Novonordisk and Professor at La Jolla institute

Maria Cristina Nostro, PhD

Assistant Professor
Endocrine and Diabetes Platform
Toronto, ON, Canada

Maria Cristina Nostro is a Senior Scientist at the McEwen Stem Cell Institute and an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. She holds the Harry Rosen Chair in Diabetes Regenerative Medicine Research and she is a member of the Soham and Shaila Ajmera Family Transplant Centre at the Toronto General Hospital.

Her research is focused on generating functional β cells from human pluripotent stem cells.

Her group has defined critical pathways leading to the efficient generation of stem cell-derived pancreatic progenitors in vitro and recently, through the use of a proteomics approach, identified a specific marker that allows the purification of these β cell progenitors. Since 2015, Dr. Nostro has been leading a multi-investigator team aimed at developing novel transplantation approaches for Type 1 Diabetes therapy.

    User Profile

Before submitting an abstract, the submitter must create a User Profile. After an abstract has been created, modifications can be made until the submission deadline.

The final deadline to submit the abstract is February 24, 2020. Abstracts received after this date cannot be accepted. The submitting author will receive notification of acceptance by March 16, 2020. Together with the confirmation of acceptance of your abstract, presenters will be requested to register for the conference. Deadline for presenter registration is March 30, 2020.

    Choosing a Theme

Indicate Which Best Describes Your Science. During the submission process, you will be asked to select one theme for your abstract. The theme is the general heading under which the abstract will be reviewed.

    Abstract Structure

Abstracts in all themes should be structured chronologically in five sections: first Introduction; then Materials and Methods; Results; and Discussion (together, these three sections make up the paper's body); and finally, Conclusion.

    • The Introduction section clarifies the motivation for the work presented and prepares readers for the structure of the paper.
    • The Materials and Methods section provides sufficient detail for other scientists to reproduce the experiments presented in the paper. In some journals, this information is placed in an appendix, because it is not what most readers want to know first.
    • The Results and Discussion sections present and discuss the research results, respectively. They are often usefully combined into one section, however, because readers can seldom make sense of results alone without accompanying interpretation — they need to be told what the results mean.
    • The Conclusion section presents the outcome of the work by interpreting the findings at a higher level of abstraction than the Discussion and by relating these findings to the motivation stated in the Introduction. Explain the significance of your findings / outcomes and future implications of the results.
    Abstract Guidelines

All abstracts must be submitted electronically through the Conference website

    • Abstracts will be accepted in English
    • There is no fee for submitting an abstract
    • There are no limitations on the number of abstracts that an individual can submit. However, one individual can only present one (1) abstract as oral presentations during the entire Conference. If you have more than one abstract accepted, you will be obliged to identify alternate presenters.
    • The abstract text body is limited to approximately 400 words, including spaces. A maximum of two figures/images (in JPG, GIF, or PNG with ideally 600 dpi) can be included. These will not count toward the word limit, nor will the information about authors, institutions and study groups. File size of 2 MB maximum for each figure.
    • Tables: do not insert tables into the body of the abstracts, the system will not recognize the format of the table. Tables will need to be uploaded as image into the body of the abstract.
    • Ensure that all co-authors approve of the abstract submission, publication, and potential presentation. Abstracts cannot be changed or withdrawn after February 24, 2020. Once the abstract as be scored by reviewers, no change in the body of the abstract will be accepted.
    • Presenter must confirm and register to the Conference by March 30, 2020, otherwise the abstract will not be published.
Notification of Acceptance or Rejection to Corresponding Author

Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent to the submitting (corresponding) author by February 24, 2020. Please note that only the corresponding author will receive mail concerning the abstract and is responsible for informing all co-authors of the status of the abstract. Authors whose abstracts have been accepted will receive instructions for the presentation of their abstract.

  • Abstract Review And Selection Process
    • All submitted abstracts will go through review process carried out by the Scientific Program committee.
    • Abstracts which do not meet the focus of the topic category as requested by the authors will be reassigned to another category.
    • Scores assigned by all reviewers are averaged. Rejections are further evaluated by the Scientific Program Committee.
  • Policies For Abstract Submission
    Copyright Policy

Abstracts should not include libelous or defamatory content. Material presented in abstracts should not violate any copyright laws. If figures/graphics/images have been taken from sources not copyrighted by the author, it is the author’s sole responsibility to secure the rights from the copyright holder in writing to reproduce those figures/graphics/images for both worldwide print and web publication. All reproduction costs charged by the copyright holder must be borne by the author.

    Resubmission Policy

An abstract that has been previously published or presented at a national, regional or international meeting can only be submitted if there are new methods, findings, updated information or other valid reasons for submitting.

    Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a serious professional misconduct. All abstracts are screened for plagiarism and when identified, the abstract and any other abstracts submitted by the same author are rejected. In addition, the submitting author’s profile and scholarship application, in the case one has been submitted, will also be cancelled.
