In accordance with the By-Laws of The Transplantation Society, this letter is to notify you of the impending elections of Officers and Councilors-at-large and to seek nominations to fill the positions being vacated at the 27th International Congress of The Transplantation Society in Madrid, Spain in July 2018. The Council and its Officers are important to TTS’ fulfillment of its strategy and mission. We are therefore seeking nominations of highly qualified and dedicated individuals to ensure the continued success of TTS.

Before or After Transplantation? A Review of the Cost Effectiveness of Treating Waitlisted Patients With Hepatitis C
Tapper EB, Afdhal NH, Curry MP.
Transplantation. 2017 ;101(5):933-937.
Direct acting antiviral therapies have dramatically changed the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. For patients awaiting a liver transplant, the timing of treatment can be important: treating HCV usually decreases the risk of death and transplantation; conversely, cured patients with decompensated cirrhosis may be “stuck” at a stable MELD with nonprogressive liver disease and an overall poor quality of life. Tapper et al review the current literature, focusing on cost-effectiveness analyses, regarding HCV therapy before or after liver transplant, and discuss what is needed to make patient-centered decisions in the future.
October 20 - Minutes and seconds equal precious moments in organ transplantation, so when Dr. Robert Liwski and his team found a way to trim the time it takes to confirm an organ match by 70 per cent, the world listened. Dubbed the Halifax Protocol, Dr. Liwski, pathologist and director of the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) lab at the QEII Health Sciences Centre was motivated to innovate when he realized the original crossmatch protocol had last been updated in 1989.
October 18 - Contributing to the evolution of NYU Langone Health’s (previously known as New York University Langone Medical Center) face transplant care protocol has been a remarkable journey for four nurses, who published a detailed article on nursing care at all stages of the procedure.
October 16 - Recently, physicians at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Heart Institute and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center reviewed available data and research to provide a perspective on the use of ECMO on patients on the lung transplantation list. Their report appears in the Journal of Thoracic Disease.
October 17 - The Organ Procurement Transplant Network (OPTN) registry collects data on posttransplant malignancies in solid organ transplant recipients. Complete and accurate registry data on skin cancer is critical for research on epidemiology and interventions. MedicalResearch.com Interview with: Thuzar M.Shin MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
October 20 - A University of Hawaii Manoa researcher is developing ways to make earlier detection of kidney disease possible. Kevin Bennett, associate professor and associate chair of UH Manoa’s biology department, is focused on preclinical, technology-based research and developing new detection methods.
October 20 - A new study presented this week at The Liver Meeting® -; held by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases - found that increased utilization of split liver transplantation (sharing a donor liver between one pediatric and one adult patient) could decrease the number of children who die awaiting liver transplantation without decreasing liver transplantation access for adult patients.
