Development and Validation of a Socioeconomic Kidney Transplant Derailers Index

In general, the completion of transplant evaluation and receiving a transplant for end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is rather complex. Lower socioeconomic status (SES) of kidney patients is associated with a lower likelihood of receiving a deceased donor kidney transplant (DDKT) or living donor kidney transplant (LDKT). In this article, Peipert and coworkers detail the creation and validation of a single score Kidney Transplant Derailers Index (KTDI) using a dataset of 733 patients presenting for renal transplant evaluation at a single transplant center in California. The KTDI represents a rare individual-level scale measuring socioeconomic barriers to transplantation and risk for dropping out of evaluation or not receiving a LDKT. Overall, the authors address SES-related barriers to transplantation, an important aspect of transplant evaluation, which is in general difficult to measure.

Nov. 11 - Doctors at Detroit's Henry Ford Hospital have performed a double-lung transplant on a person with a vaping-related lung injury.The hospital system is the first to perform the surgery on someone who had irreparable lung damage from vaping.
